2007 Annual Conference
Strategic Planning: Lessons from Practice
Session Abstract

John Hall
Senior Vice President

Most organizations think about strategy development and leadership development
as separate processes. This means that the learning environment for leadership
is separated from the real work of the business. When an organization merges its
strategic planning with its leadership development into one seamless process,
leaders are developed while working on high stakes strategic issues. Through carefully
constructed forums at Oracle Corporation, leadership teams were given a strategic
work project under the direction of a senior executive. The teams started by learning
together and then immediately applied that learning to the strategic work challenge
at hand. This approach, called Fusion Learning, works because people learn best
by doing, and they also "do" best by learning. Fusion Learning builds
strong leadership and ownership for a strategy and generates the momentum to sustain
an initiative long enough to deliver tangible results.
In a hands-on session, we will explore how Oracle Corporation used Fusion Learning
to rapidly develop a new go-to-market strategy for their $300 million education
business and how they engaged and developed their leadership team in the process.
You will hear from John Hall, Senior Vice President, Oracle Corporation and
Liz Wiseman, former Vice President, Oracle Corporation and President, Mindshare
Learning Systems. In addition to sharing the Oracle case study, they will give
you practice tools for re-energizing your approach to strategic planning and
leadership development
