May: Message from Tim Trotter, ASP President
May
Message from Tim Trotter, ASP President
Greetings
Throughout the history of ASP, many dedicated people have given freely of their time and talents to advance the strategy profession. None of those individuals expected anything in return for their vast contributions. They did it because of their belief in the vision and mission of the association and the personal enjoyment they received from working with others. That enjoyment and collaboration has formed many long lasting and priceless friendships that will last for a life time. It has been a win-win for ASP and its involved members.
In my tenure as your president, I have witnessed this first hand and believe that the true value of your membership is realized when you have invested your energies and ideas. Is only then that you will receive your greatest value in your ASP membership.
As we enter into the end of our fiscal and program year, many chapters will be holding their local elections, comprising their committees and developing the fall programs. All of them would like you to get involved and contribute. To all of you, who are already involved, thank you!
The future of ASP and its members is directly dependent on our ability to pool our human and financial resources on programs that will make a difference. I hope that you will do your part in assisting ASP as we take our profession to a higher level in the coming year.
To our continued success,
Tim Trotter

April: The National Budget Debate
April
Message from ASP President
I'm sure most of you have been watching the ongoing debate in congress and the White House regarding the budget. It's hard to believe that coming to a resolution is such a difficult process. Most of us work in environments that require strict budgets, strong controls and greater accountability to the people and boards we serve. I hope that our elected leaders can think "strategically" and do what's best for our country now and for the generations to come.
Like many non-profit organizations, ASP encountered budgetary challenges during the downturn of our global economies. Our response was to think strategically to identify the most important programs that have the most benefit to our members, such as ASP's Standards and Certification Program and ASP's Annual Conference. We knew that we needed to focus on our core strengths and not allow the organization to bite off more than we could handle. This sounds logical, but it can be a hard task. Today, because of that focus, we have seen a huge improvement in our fiscal wellness and ability to deliver higher value to our members. Next year, we will be continuing on that same path, and perhaps we can add more valuable projects for our members and chapters.
The bottom line is we all need to live within our means... stick to a balanced budget and challenge ourselves to always be open to better and more cost-effective ways to deliver value to our members. Perhaps ASP's Finance Committee should move to Washington!
To our continued success,
Tim Trotter

March: Great Conference in Dallas!
March
Message from ASP President
Wow...what a great conference in Dallas! I would like to thank the conference presenters, sponsors and exhibitors from a great program. And, a big thank you to conference committee and Dallas Chapter for a job well done.
It was nice to see many new faces and make new connections with people from all over the world. I could see the excitement and interest in strategy and the sharing of ideas and viewpoints. It's venues like this that truly provide value to our members. I hope that everyone will stay connected and continue the ongoing discussions on how we can use strategy to advance within the organizations we represent.
I would like to make a special introduction to this year's ASP Awards winners:
Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award Maryland Youth classic Orchestra
Honorable Mentions, Richard Goodman Strategic Planning Award American Eagle Federal Credit Union, US Army Corps of Engineers, Town of Richmond Hill
Hall of Fame Awards Dr. Richard Goodman (deceased), Steve Haines (San Diego Chapter), Seena Sharp (Los Angeles Chapter)
Chapter of the Year Northern California, Mary Winby & Jeff Williams, Co-Presidents
Member of the Year Don Ricketts (Denver Chapter)
Distinguished Service Award Jim Wilson (Los Angeles Chapter)
Outstanding Service Awards Eric Denniston (San Diego Chapter), Dr. Tina White Potter (Dallas Chapter), Randy Rollinson (Chicago Chapter), Jennifer Beever (Los Angeles Chapter)
Sumner Alpert Student Scholarship Award Kevin Watford, Hendrix College, Arkansas
Without their expertise, enthusiasm and dedication, ASP would not be the organization it is today. We are truly blessed with many great people.
For those of you who could not attend the conference this year, there is always next year. Next year's conference will be in Chicago and combined with our annual meeting. This will allow for the members to have a more active role in ASP. We are close to setting the date, but it looks like in early May. Stay tuned for more information.
To our success,
Tim Trotter

February: Biggest Storms in Chicagoland's History
February
Message from ASP President

January: Greetings and Happy New Year!
January
Message from ASP President
Hi Everyone,
Greetings and Happy New Year!
As we usher in the New Year, it's always best to have a positive attitude and perspective. As we see signs of a slowly recovering economy it's imperative for ASP and its members to build a sustainable environment through strategy for our nation and world to recover with confidence. When I look at my role as Manager of Strategic Planning at DuPage County, it's about keeping focus and building and deploying practical strategies to accomplish what our residents expect - greater efficiencies and effectiveness in government. That has a direct and tangible linkage to our recovery.
In my role as President of ASP it's really no different. We have a responsibility to assist our nation to do the same thing in both private and public sectors. And we have a responsibility or duty to build a stronger organization to support this effort. Most vibrant and growing industries are supported by strong trade organizations. ASP through its national board and chapters needs to expect more of ourselves to support the strategy profession. Status quo in 2011 won't get us there. What are needed are strong ideas, expanded teamwork and focused strategies to accomplish this task. Are you ready to step up and help yourself and ASP? I sure hope so.
Attending our upcoming 2011 conference in Dallas is a great way to start. The topics are relevant to the challenges we're facing and the collaboration is a vital first step. Many of our chapters are offering valuable programs in your own backyard. Take advantage of them.
I would like to also welcome Jennifer Beever to the ASP Board. She has been a tremendous support to ASP in the past with her marketing expertise and I look forward to her support in 2011.
My best to all of you in 2011!
To our success,
Tim Trotter

Bain & Co recently released the latest results of its multi-year survey of management tool
usage. In 1993, Bain launched a multi-year research project to get the facts about management
tools and trends. The objective is two-fold:
- To provide managers with information they need to identify and integrate tools that will
improve bottom-line results.
- To understand how global executives view their strategic challenges and priorities. This
year, they received 1,430 completed surveys from a broad range of international executives.
The results show that strategic planning remains the management tool that rates highest
in satisfaction among small, medium and large firms globally. It is also among the most
widely used of all tools. View Survey (pdf)
